Now we have almost reached the end of this unit.
Do you now feel more confident about using what
you have learnt and practiced to understand and to express greetings and
introductions in English? I hope you do.
Before we finish this unit, I'd
like to briefly sum up what you have been doing here, and what you should be
able to do by now. This unit focuses on the practice of informal greetings and
introductions. I guess most of you already know how to say hello and good-bye,
but in this unit you have learnt in more detail how English speakers perform
these functions and on what occasions people greet each other informally. The
listening part of this unit aims at the training of the ability to listen for
the overall topic of the material and for specific information required by the
specific task.
Some of you may feel that these exercises are rather too
easy. Well, I can't agree with you. It very much depends on how you approach
them. If they are reduced to "reading tasks", they are easy. But this is NOT a
reading course. It is no easy job for anyone at this level to greet others and
to introduce himself/herself appropriately in English. What is important is to
make what you have learnt "something of your own". By this, I mean they are at
the tip of your tongue, fully at your command when you orally communicate with
others.
Some of the items in your Interactive English (Student's Book)
are not covered here, for example, "Spelling" and "Pronunciation". It doesn't
mean they can be neglected. They are equally important. Enough has been said
about these points in your textbook, which is the reason why they are not
included here. So, I suggest you go to your textbook and finish all the tasks
that are not covered here.
